Reflections

Last year, Bryan and I had the privilege of being in New York City during the sixth anniversary of the attacks on September 11th. I blogged briefly about what it was like for us, and sharing our stories with Nichole- our friend with who we stayed with.

Here's an excerpt from that post...

During dinner, we shared our 9/11 stories.

I had just come back from NYC a week before the attacks. I was in high school at the time, and had summer reading as an assignment that I decided to do while I spent most of July and August in New York. The World Trade Center had a mall underneath the structures, and I bought the books, Madame Bovary and The Things They Carried, from a D.Dalton there. For some reason I saved the receipt- which is hanging in my room to this day as an eerie reminder of how close things could have been. For weeks I wondered if there were terrorist scouts with me on trains, at that mall, behind me in line. I wondered if the courteous salesperson had died, or maybe didn't have to work that day.

I woke up to that morning of September 11th with my dad telling me the Trade Center was on fire, a plane had hit it. Minutes later, I saw the second. Not long after that, the Towers fell. It's giving me chills just typing about it. I don't think I went to school that day. I'll never, ever forget the way I felt that day, and the link that I have hanging framed in my bedroom.

Nichole remembers waking up to a call from a friend saying to "not go to work today, the Twin Towers are on fire." She got up, walked to her view of the NYC skyline (she was living in Jersey at the time), and saw the second plane hit. Seeing her choke up telling the story was something you can't describe in blogs, or even in person. You just had to be there.

And here's Bryan's account, if you missed it-

"I was on a flight home from Ireland, somewhere over Greenland or Iceland- I don't really remember which. The captain first announced that the airplane was turning around, and gave no specific details as to why. As time went on, he gave us bit by bit info until he finally admitted that the United States had been victim to a terrorist attack, and that the World Trade Center was targeted.

The airport was crazy. The media was interviewing everyone, including ourselves. The people on the ground were trying to explain to us what had happened, since we hadn't seen any footage still.

They shut down the airports for days, and told us to keep calling back to see when it was safe to fly again. A week afterwards, I was home. It was a quiet flight.
"

I was just speaking with my aunt about her experience- about how she was called into work (despite being on vacation) to help out at the hospital downtown where she is a nurse. The hairs rose on my neck when she told me that while everyone on staff was waiting, hardly anyone came other than firemen/policemen/other personnel. She paused for awhile, and then said "I don't think I'll ever forget how quiet it was, just waiting there."

It's stories like the ones told that I feel need to be passed down to future generations. As morose as it was, I recall hearing stories from my grandpa about Pearl Harbor and the resolve that strengthened the country not only from a global view- but more importantly from a person to person basis, which mirrors what happened to all of us just eight years ago. I can't help but believe that the proud and hopeful feelings I had as a child listening to these stories might be the same ones felt by someone else regarding what happened on that dark September day.

I'd like to hear some of your stories as well, if you care to share them. Feel free to send me an email, drop me a phone call, reply down below- whatever works best for you. I'll be compiling some of them for a journal that I'm making.

Here are a few pictures from last year's memorial.

It's Pretty Gnarly When..

The person you're staying with in NYC is in magazine interviews and photo shoots like this one.

Make sure you pick up the latest copy of JUXTAPOZ magazine, and you'll read all about it....

Or else you'll end up like this guy.

Coming home before the weekend, so be sure to make it out to our first bike ride, this Saturday! Details in the picture to your right!

New York Update

Hey Everyone,

Before I get started, let's take a moment and reflect what happened on this day seven years ago.

Everyone remembers exactly what they were doing from that day. The day we flew in, we shared our stories over dinner and each of us had a unique perspective from that day that's so hard to forget. From myself leaving NYC only days before the attack, to Bryan being on a plane from Ireland, to Nichole's story of seeing the second plane hit, and mistaking it for a rescue plane. I'll post our stories throughout the day, so stay tuned. It's humbling being in the city on this day.

It's about 5:12 local time as I'm writing this. Bryan and I have to head to midtown for an event and are operating on about three hours of sleep. Uploading pictures takes quite a bit of time, so expect to see updates of the cell phone picture like until either,

a.) I have enough time to post (by the time we get back here to Brooklyn, I'm physically drained).
b.) Until I get back later next week.

And trust me, there will be a full recap of everyday once the time is appropriate, but as of right now it's my time to shower. So thanks for the lovely emails so far (to most of you, man p and stop following this blog anonymously!), and if you haven't yet do click on the "FOLLOW THIS BLOG" button on the right. If you sign up soon, you wont regret it.

Alright, it's getting late. Or it's getting early. Whichever. I'm halfway to losing it.

Until next time,

-jason

I can't forget to give my propers to my beloved LOS ANGELES ANGELS. Congratulations on clinching another division crown, beating the closest competitor by almost 20 games. It's like winning Monopoly with 80% of the money, or dropping all the letters for an automatic kill in Scrabble on the first move. Yeah, it's like that.

"Here we are, assholes having the greatest beer in the world, just coming from a Mets game, and eating at some random Scottish bar in Manhattan;watching our team celebrate on SportsCenter. I don't think it gets much beter than that."

Where We're Staying...

Nichole's place seriously looks like a museum.

But at least I can wake up and read books like this every morning.

These Vagabond Shoes Are Longing to Stray

I'll be in NYC for a few days, so posting may be a bit irregular. It may be once a day, or twelve times a day- so make sure you check the site frequently. And if you haven't yet, be one of my Bear Cubs and start following The Bear Den. There's a button on the right to sign up, and trust me, you wont be disappointed. The first 30 (who are un-anonymous) will get something really special.

Until we see each other,

Jason

Lurkfest at Victoria Gardens

Top of the morning to you, Monday! You rear your ugly head out of a perfect weekend and surprise us with a slow and painful death.

Slow.

Painful.

Lets travel back in time to Saturday night, which was the perfect night to creep around Rancho Cucamonga to find out what was going on at Victoria Gardens. Maybe this recap will help your case of the Mondays.

Sephora, where your husbands will dillegently wait outside for you rather than peruse through the store.

Check out the Insta-Jonas Brothers dress up kit Urban Outfitters has. We literally pulled this off a rack, that scarf/ascot/piece of flair was included with that outfit.

Just because you drive one of these...

...doesn't get you off the hook here in Cal-eeeeh-fohhhhn-yeaaaah. Hands free, OR ELSE.

Then it was supper time at Lucille's...

...so we could sip our drinks out of mason jars.

Hey kids, free ice cream. You heard it from me. Save the date.

And finally, this...

...is looking good for this. Details on Tuesday.

You've Just Crossed Over Into...

The Bearded Zone

PLAY VIDEO

FADE IN:

EXT. EMPIRE STATE BUILDING - NIGHT

An ELEVATOR full of TOURISTS makes its daily and normally routine ride up to the OBSERVATION DECK.

CLOSE-UP - BRYAN'S BEARD

BRYAN'S FINGERS run through his BEARD. Something is wrong. The ELEVATOR SERVICE LIGHTS come up as the lift goes dim. Bryan wonders aloud if this has anything to do with trimming his beard earlier than the bet was intended for.

WIDE-SHOT - ELEVATOR

All the lights suddenly grow dim, except for a weird, peculiar light SHINING on Bryan. The ELEVATOR DOORS slowly CREAK their way open. There is nobody left on the elevator, and where the doors open it is surely not the present.

There is an old SEPIA TONED NEWSPAPER on the FLOOR, suggesting that the year is no longer 2008. An OLD, WRINKLED BELL BOY emerges from the END OF THE HALL.

BELL BOY (quietly, under his breath)
"We've been expecting your arrival, Mr. Geraghty. We always knew you wouldn't play fair. You're right on time."

FREEZE FRAME on Bryan.

WHIP-PAN TO:

ROD SERLING - calmly smoking a cigarette as he stands atop the observation deck.

SERLING
Submitted for your consideration: a man in an elevator, barreling up a shaft of concrete and steel and fun. Bryan Geraghty has just won a bet by growing his beard for a full year, and is cashing in his prize in glamorous, glitzy New York City. But in a moment this fantasy will fizzle; somehow others know of his devious and deceptive fraud. In a moment a man, whose only intention was to complete a silly bet, will turn a corner and come face to face with his worst nightmare: thematic incongruity. He's about to discover it's 1988, a year when gas was 91 cents a gallon, inflation was at 4%, Michael Jackson was singing about a whore in Dirty Diana, and the answer to "Will Dustin Hoffman Win Best Actor in Rain Man?" could only be found in... the Twilight Zone.

FADE TO BLACK.

Did Bryan really trim his beard? Will Bryan ever find his way out of the creepy, bizarro, alternate universe that he's trapped in? Who was the Bell Boy talking about as in 'we?' Answers to this and the following will be answered during the second and third week of September. Stay tuned..
